Fierrabras was one of the worst productions of the Scala last season. Despite a good cast the critics weren’t convinced by the Daniel Harding’s interpretation, mainly criticized for the lack of tension and engagement.
Carla Moreni on “Il Sole24Ore” summed up the impression about the former assistant of Claudio Abbado: “Un discorso a parte va fatto invece per Daniel Harding, fino a poco tempo fa acclamato trascinatore di entusiasmi e affetti, e ora invece direttore sospeso su un grande punto interrogativo”.
Tosca at Royal Opera House stays in this negative list, too. Dan Ettinger, music director of the National Theatre Mannheim, wasn’t appreciated by the English critics,
Richard Morrison for “The Times”: “He contrives loud, coarse orchestral effects, but the ensemble is untidy and the principal cellist doesn’t excel in the (admittedly nerve-racking) Act III solo”.
The production that reach the lowest conducting rating in 2018 is… Benvenuto Cellini at Opéra national de Paris conducted by the musical director of the same opera house Phillippe Jordan.
We should say Jordan collect also a conducting rating close to perfection in the last production of Tristan und Isolde. However, the French critics didn’t appreciate his work on Berlioz opera, as didn’t like the cast either.
On “Diapason” Emmanuel Dupuy is very harsh with Jordan “qui romantise à l’excès l’ouverture, au risque d’égarer les musiciens dans ses alanguissements. Le reste est à l’avenant, car à force de rechercher le beau son, le chef en oublie l’essentiel : le grain de folie, le vif-argent des attaques, la rapidité des enchaînements. Au contraire, tout pèse et s’engourdit”.
