That was not the fault of the excellent singers, chiefly Roderick Williams, whose every expressively nuanced phrase was a joy.
The singers and the orchestral players are superb.
This was an amazing achievement from all concerned. The Return of Ulysses is a long opera (we had around two hours 25 minutes of music) and the performance engaged from begining to end.
One great asset was Roderick Williams’s flawless and moving Ulysses, flickering mercurially from hope to pathos to murderous hot temper.
Curmudge over. There are some great vocal performances here, and it’s worth going just for them.
