Once again, ROH music director Antonio Pappano conducts. Never before has Wagner’s fantasy of gods, giants and dragons seemed more pertinent.
In a spectacular climactic end she is bereft of her goddess-hood, banished from Valhalla and imprisoned on a rock surrounded by a circle of fire. The singing all round is outstanding.
Once again, conductor Sir Antonio Pappano delivers a beautiful and rousing account of the score, with the few criticisms that might have been levied against the orchestral performance in Das Rheingold
It’s the second revival of Keith Warner’s production, but still there were glitches and even Nina Stemme, as Brünnhilde, had a faltering start.
