Now in revival, this show works better than ever, but the suggestion by some reviewers that Lise Davidsen sings everyone else off stage is wide of the mark.
The young Norwegian soprano’s voice, silken at the top, rich with deep mezzo colours, pours forth flawlessly as if in one clear, stupendous breath....
Vocally megawatted, toweringly tall, expressively direct, Davidsen is blessed with top notes that could ping us all the way to the moon....
This innovative production with significant changes of location and period does not entirely work but fine singing, stage sets and orchestration saved it from disaster....
The London Philharmonic Orchestra makes a virtue of this feast of musical styles under their eager young conductor, Cornelius Meister....
