Now in revival, the production has settled in wonderfully, with the splendour of Miriam Buether’s sets and Nicky Gillibrand’s costumes matching the grandeur of Musorgsky’s conception.
Jones’s production has much to be said for it, especially when compared to more recent stagings I have seen from him (Katya Kabanova and La Damnation de Faust, for instance).
In Bryn Terfel, the production has its ideal exponent, a Boris of subtle musings and tortured doubts. He seems conflicted even at his coronation and is almost unbearably tender in the scenes with his
Magnificent in its vocal variety, Terfel’s portrayal of the tormented ruler is on the grandest scale; but this is an extraordinary cast from top to bottom.
Under Marc Albrecht, the orchestra never pauses and I've never heard them play with more clarity and pinpoint precision in this house.
